The Sneaker Buying Guide: Fit, Sole and Materials

You will spend more hours in your everyday sneakers than in any other garment you own, and unlike a shirt that fits badly, a shoe that fits badly does damage. Blisters are the mild version; the longer-term versions are toenail problems, plantar pain and knee complaints that people rarely trace back to footwear.

This guide covers the three things that actually determine whether a pair works for you — fit, sole and upper — and the ones that mostly do not.

Fit: the part everyone gets wrong

Shoe sizing is not standardised. A UK 8 in one brand is a different shoe from a UK 8 in another, and the same brand often varies between a running model and a casual one. Your size is a starting hypothesis, not a fact, which is why every rule below is about measuring rather than trusting the number.

Measure at the right time of day

Feet swell over the course of a day — by enough to change a half size. Measure or try shoes on in the late afternoon or evening, never first thing in the morning, or you will consistently buy shoes that are too small for the hours you actually wear them.

Leave a thumb's width

With the shoe on and laced, there should be roughly a thumb's width — about 1 to 1.5 cm — between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Note that your longest toe is not always your big toe. Your foot slides forward slightly with every step, and without that gap your toes hit the front all day.

Check width, not just length

Length is the number on the box; width is what actually causes pain. The widest part of your foot should sit at the widest part of the shoe, and you should be able to wiggle your toes freely side to side. If the upper bulges over the sole when you stand, the shoe is too narrow — going up a length size is a poor fix for that, because it makes the shoe too long as well.

The heel should not move

Lace the shoe properly and walk. Your heel should stay locked in place; any noticeable lift is what causes blisters. A slight amount can be fixed with a heel-lock lacing pattern, but a heel that slides freely means the shoe is the wrong shape for your foot.

Measure both feet

Most people have one foot larger than the other, sometimes by a noticeable margin. Always fit to the larger foot and adjust the other with lacing or an insole. And when you try shoes on, wear the socks you will actually use with them — a thick sock changes fit by close to half a size.

The sole: three layers doing three jobs

A sneaker sole is not one piece. Understanding the three parts explains most of the price difference between pairs.

The outsole

The bottom layer that touches the ground. Rubber outsoles grip well and wear slowly. Cheaper shoes often use a harder, lighter compound or blown rubber that wears down noticeably faster, particularly at the outer heel. Look at the tread pattern too: deeper, more defined lugs mean more grip on wet surfaces, which matters more than most people account for in monsoon.

The midsole

The cushioning layer, and the part that determines how the shoe feels underfoot. Most midsoles are EVA foam — light and comfortable, but it compresses permanently over time. This is the real reason old sneakers stop feeling supportive even when the upper still looks fine: the foam has flattened and no longer returns energy or absorbs impact.

Denser compounds and moulded EVA hold their shape longer than cheap injected foam. If a shoe feels wonderfully soft in the shop, be slightly suspicious — very soft foam usually means very fast compression.

The insole

The removable footbed. It is the cheapest part of any shoe and the easiest to upgrade. If a pair fits well but feels unsupportive, replacing the insole is a small, inexpensive change that often fixes it entirely.

Uppers: what the shoe is made of

  • Canvas — breathable, light, casual, cheap to replace. Offers almost no structure or water resistance, and stains easily.
  • Knit / mesh — the most breathable option and the most forgiving of an odd foot shape, since it stretches. Less durable at the toe and harder to clean.
  • Leather — durable, moulds to your foot over time, and cleans up well. Heavier, hotter, and needs occasional conditioning.
  • Synthetic leather — consistent, cheap, easy to wipe down. It does not breathe, and it eventually cracks and peels rather than ageing gracefully.
  • Suede — looks excellent, hates water and dust. A fine choice if you are willing to brush and protect it, a bad one otherwise.

How the shoe is attached

Look at where the upper meets the sole. Most sneakers are glued, which is fine when done well and is the cause of the classic sole-separation failure when done badly. Run a fingernail along the join: a clean, even line of adhesive with no gaps and no squeezed-out excess is a good sign. Stitching visible through the sole edge means a mechanically attached sole, which is more repairable and generally lasts longer.

When to replace them

For shoes used mainly for walking and daily wear, the midsole is usually spent somewhere between 12 and 18 months of regular use — earlier if you use them for running. The signals are: the outsole tread has worn smooth in patches, the midsole shows compression creases along the side that do not spring back, the shoe feels harder underfoot than it used to, or the shoe no longer sits flat when placed on a table.

The practical trick is to own two pairs and alternate them. Foam recovers between wears, and the uppers dry out fully, so two pairs rotated will last considerably more than twice as long as one pair worn every day. It is the rare case where buying more is genuinely cheaper.
