Style & Buying Guides

Honest, practical advice to help you buy better and get more out of what you already own — from reading a composition label to judging how a garment is put together.

Most disappointing clothing purchases are not styling mistakes. They are fit mistakes and fabric mistakes — a shirt bought a size up because the shoulders were never checked, a summer top that turned out to be mostly polyester, a jacket chosen for how it looked in a photograph rather than for the weather it had to handle. All three are avoidable with information that is usually available before you buy, if you know which part of the page to read.

That is what these guides are for. They are written in-house rather than syndicated, and they are deliberately not product round-ups: nothing here is arranged to push you toward a particular purchase, and much of it will save you one. Several are about getting more life out of clothes you own already — how to wash denim so it lasts years instead of months, how to layer for a climate that swings fifteen degrees between dawn and afternoon, how to spot the construction shortcuts that decide whether a garment survives its second season.

Where a guide states something as fact — a fibre’s behaviour, a fit rule, a wash temperature — it is because it holds up generally, not because it suits us. Where a question genuinely comes down to preference, we say so and give you the trade-off instead of an answer. Our editorial policy sets out how this content is produced and how it is kept separate from anything commercial on the site.
